Spring into Fall: Now’s the Time to Plant Bulbs

Spring flowers blooming

If you want to be the first house on the block with flowers next year, now is the time to plant fall bulbs. These flowers will start sprouting with vibrant color in your garden as the days begin to warm in the spring.

Bulbs 101

As they are usually perennials, bulbs flourish through a period of growth and flowering, followed by a period of dormancy. These plants store their entire life cycle underground, ensuring they have proper nutrients reserved for their survival during peak season.

Planting Bulbs

Storage

When stored at home, bulbs should be kept in a cool area away from light, (a fridge works!) until they’re ready to be planted. Outdoor temperatures should be consistently below 60°F before sowing.

Layout

When considering layout, don’t overthink it. Large quantities scattered around will provide a natural, fuller display in the spring. However, it’s important to make sure to plant bulbs at the right depth and in the correct orientation.

Installation

A good rule of thumb is to dig the hole 2-3 times deeper as the bulb height. For example, a 2-inch geophyte should be planted 6-inches deep. The “root-end”, or the more rounded end, should be placed into the soil first so that the more slender end is pointing up.

Environment

Well-draining soil is also important. Peat moss, compost, or other organic matter can be added to improve drainage of clay soil. A deep watering and fertilizer after installation will help them properly establish before winter.

Top Picks

  • Tulips, daffodils, and dahlias are some of the most widely known varieties of autumn bulbs.
  • Hyacinth, crocus, and allium are also common plantings, though lesser known by name.
  • All these species would likely make the perfect addition to your garden.
