A Backyard Built for Living: Inside This Outdoor Transformation

As we end the year, we want to look back at a loved project. Dubbed the “Monster Build” on social media for its large footprint, you’ll find it hard to believe you’re still outdoors when stepping into this backyard! The space was meant to bring the same level of comfort and sophistication you’d expect to see inside the home — and every inch of it was planned purposefully.

At POE, we always take the extra time during the designing phase to concentrate on specific detailing. From material selection to finishing touches, all aspects of a plan are chosen carefully to create something classic and durable, not just what’s currently trending. The goal is simple: construct an effortless, elevated, and made for living backyard.

Rethinking What a Backyard Can Be

Because this home sits close to its neighbors, privacy was a big factor. The family requested a space that felt protected and exclusive but still inviting — somewhere they could host larger gatherings as their kids got older.

So, we reimagined it to handle all kinds of entertaining in every season. The result is an exterior area that functions like an extension of the home — secure, connected, and full of personality.

The Pavilion: Where Comfort Meets Craftsmanship

The showpiece of the design is the spacious pavilion, tied directly into the house with a seamless awning. Beneath the aesthetics, there’s a lot of unseen foundational work that makes this transition from indoors to outdoors feel simply harmonious.

To keep the sizeable structure from appearing heavy, we went with a soft, neutral palette on the bead board, ceiling and trim. It’s a classic combination that projects warmth and gives it a timeless, lived-in feel.

Features and Finishes

The natural stone fireplace anchors one side of the pavilion. It’s paired with built-in firewood boxes and an oversized TV, making it the perfect place to unwind — whether that’s with friends or just a quiet evening by a glowing fire. Hardscape elements tie back to other materials used on the front façade, thus highlighting visual continuity from front to back.

On the opposite side, an outdoor kitchen steals the show. Powder-coated aluminum cabinets, a wood-burning pizza oven, and plenty of countertop make it as functional as it is beautiful. Every feature was considered — even the natural bluestone pavers, sized to complement the scale of the whole setting and reinforcing a sense of symmetry and cohesion.

Design That Feels Effortless

Staying focused on uniformity, flow, and comfort was a central part of our plan, as these factors make a larger expanse feel inviting. Subtle wood accents and curved corbels soften the look, while recessed lighting, Bromic heaters, and a built-in sound system add an extra layer of relaxation and coziness.

Just beyond the pavilion, there’s a secondary fire pit area — charming for late-night s’mores or a quiet escape from the main hub. The combination of cool blue tones in the patio and cabinetry against the homes earthy-hued brick imparts a balanced, “zen” feel.

Built for Connection

From plush seating to ambient lighting and high-end appliances, every element was chosen to make this addition both stylish and livable. It’s big enough for a crowd but still has an outdoor living room vibe – restful yet elegant.

This project depicts what we aim for at POE: thoughtful functional design, quality craftsmanship, and that little bit of wow that makes you want to stay awhile.
