Taming the Dog (Days of Summer)

Pergola Struxture Sun

As the summer temperatures continue to rise, finding ways to design your space for staying cool is more important than ever. Whether you are enjoying your garden or just relaxing, following the PAWS rule will surely keep you comfortable this season: Pools, Apparel, Water, StruXure

Pools

Nothing says summertime quite like taking a dip in the pool. Custom inground options offer the most versatility and adaptability, but precast variations such as Plunge Pools can still fit your vision, budget and individual needs.

Rain curtains, fountains and other moving aquatic features may add both visual interest and fun to a pool installation. Flowing water evokes a natural cooling effect as droplets are dispersed by the wind.

Apparel

What you wear makes a huge difference when lounging in the sun or gardening. Light colored clothing reflects more sunlight to keep you cooler. Moisture-wicking fabrics draw perspiration to the outer layer, helping it expel rather than stick and trap heat. In a similar fashion, wearing breathable materials facilitates air circulation throughout, evaporating sweat and lowering body temperature. Sporting items that boast all three of these characteristics will maximize the overall cooling benefits.

This is also true when considering donning more than just a shirt and pants. Hats offer essential sun protection, but need to be carefully selected for proper UV defense. Wide brimmed options that fit your head well provide the best sun protection. Ideally, your hat of choice should also include a mesh panel to let air circulate. Dressing consciously will not only protect you from the harsh sun but keep you comfortable and productive when outdoors.

Water

The most important thing to remember during the extreme heat of the summer is staying hydrated. Dehydration is dangerous and can lead to other health issues. Always keep a water bottle nearby when you’re soaking up the rays. Avoiding plastic water bottles, especially if they are exposed to direct sunlight, could protect you from possible leaching chemicals.

Just like you, your plants need to stay hydrated. Routine watering can keep your foliage lush and green. Watering in the early morning is best as it can help avert evaporation from the soil. Already established shrubs should be supplied with plenty of water once a week depending on the weather. Established perennials and groundcover should be watered once or twice a week during drier conditions. With trees, aim for every 2-3 weeks when temperatures are high and precipitation is low. Not only does keeping plants hydrated help them to thrive, but it fosters moisture within microclimates, facilitating another cooling effect for your yard.

StruXure

While a traditional model may not provide any reprieve from the sun, a StruXure aluminum pergola has motorized louvers that enable you to decide how much light is let in. Bask in the sunlight on a cooler day with the louvers completely open or surround yourself in shade by having them tightly sealed.

StruXure pergolas offer the opportunity to add fans or motorized screens for extra airflow or shade. These features deter flying insects, such as mosquitos and gnats, giving you a bug-free area. StruXures transform bright, hot spaces into luxurious shaded retreats.

Put those PAWS up and maximize your outdoor time while staying relaxed and content, even during the dog days of summer. Keep hydrated and opt in to wearing light colored breathable, moisture wicking clothing while watering your plants. Take a break with a dip in the pool and spend some time in the shade under a StruXure motorized pergola. Sweltering days don’t need to be spent inside when your backyard is designed with intention and functionality in mind. Submit an inquiry for your dream space here.
